Are all Cable Glands Waterproof?
Most cable protection glands carry an IP 65 rating or higher, which is widely considered waterproof.
Each cable gland comes with specific technical specifications that outline its IP rating. Similarly, compatible accessories, like lock nuts, clamps, brackets, or thread adaptors, also offer a specific level of protection. Types of Cable Glands
There is a wide range of cable gland types, each engineered to meet the specific demands of the cable, environment, and application. The main classifications are:
Standard (unarmoured) – For use with unarmoured, plastic, or rubber-sheathed cables, providing strain relief and environmental sealing. The HUMMEL HSK Series is a trusted choice for general industrial installations.
EMC – Provides 360° shielding of the cable braid, maintaining screened cable integrity and supporting compliance with the European EMC Directive, as in the HSK-EMC Series.
Armoured – For steel wire or steel tape armoured cables, clamping both inner and outer sheaths to provide mechanical protection and a secure earth path via the armour, as with the HSK-SPECIAL Series.
Hazardous area (ATEX/IECEx) – Ex-e and Ex-d certified glands for use in potentially explosive atmospheres across zones 1, 2, 20, 21, and 22. The HSK-Ex Series addresses industrial applications, while the EXIOS Series is engineered for offshore and oil and gas environments.
Hygienic – Stainless steel glands with FDA-compliant and ECOLAB-certified seals for food and beverage, pharmaceutical, and cleanroom environments. Dedicated variants are available for foam-cleaning and high-pressure washdown processes.
Chemical resistant – FKM fluorine rubber sealing for installations exposed to acids, solvents, and aggressive chemicals, like the VariaPro FKM Series.
Extreme Temperature – For operating conditions beyond the capability of standard seals, choose the VariaPro Temp Series.
Rail – The VariaPro Rail Series is certified to DIN EN 45545-2 and -3 for unrestricted use in rolling stock and rail infrastructure across the European network.
