What is an RF coaxial connector?

An RF coaxial connector is an electrical connector that has been designed specifically to function at radio frequencies in the multi-megahertz range. RF connectors are typically used with coaxial cables and are designed to maintain the shielding that the coaxial design offers.

RF connectors provide a fastening mechanism (such as thread, bayonet, blind mate and braces) and springs for a low ohmic electric contact while sparing the gold surface, which therefore allows a high number of mating cycles and reduces the insertion force.

What are RF coaxial connectors used for?

Common models of RF coaxial connectors are used for:

  • TV receivers
  • Two-way radio
  • Wi-Fi devices with removable antennas
  • Industrial measuring instruments

Coaxail Connectors from Northern Connectors

What are the different types of RF coaxial connector?

There is a wide range of different types of RF coaxial connectors, including:

BNC: The BNC coax connector is used professionally on laboratory instruments including oscilloscopes, as well as RF test equipment transmitters, receivers and almost any RF equipment. The BNC connector is fitted with a bayonet fixing to prevent accidental disconnection during use.

N-type: This high-performance option is used in many RF applications. Larger than its BNC counterpart, the N-type connector has a threaded coupling interface to ensure that it mates correctly. It is available in either 50 ohm or 75 ohm. Both types have mechanical differences that do not allow them to mate. N-type connectors can withstand high power levels of up to 11GHz, with some increasing to 18GHz.

SMA connector: This sub-miniature RF connector is suitable for frequencies from 12GHz, providing a reliable connection thanks to the threaded attachment method. These connectors are increasingly used in areas associated with RF and microwaves.
