Selecting an industrial connector solution for your application is about more than simply making a one-time investment. In order to keep your systems truly optimised, it’s essential to regularly review all of your components to ensure that your setup is best equipped to meet today’s challenges and needs.

This is especially important given the fast pace of innovation within the industrial connector marketplace. Leading manufacturers such as HARTING, one of our long-term partners, are continually creating new and improved connectors and components that can deliver meaningful advantages for users, including improved performance and reliability, or game-changing new functionality.

Here, we’ve teamed up with our partners at HARTING to create a rundown of some of the newest and most advanced innovations available in the HARTING connector portfolio. Each of these product groups are available now from Northern Connectors, and can deliver significant advantages to your industrial applications.

Han® F+B

HARTING Han® F+B Connectors

A specialised solution for the food and beverage industry, Han® F+B connectors have been designed with the specific requirements of food processing, bottling and packaging in mind.

Because hygiene and safety are such key considerations in these industries, all of the machinery and equipment used needs to be easy to clean, preventing dirt pockets and bacteria from accumulating. Connectors used in these applications also need to be tailored to account for the distinct zones used in food production, which differ in terms of contamination risks and the number of cleaning cycles required - for example, Zone 1 is the food zone, where components may come into direct contact with foodstuffs, while Zone 2 is the splash zone, which requires regular high-pressure washing and chemical cleaning to avoid contamination.

Han® F+B addresses all of these needs with an innovative design that makes the products suitable for use in Zone 1 and Zone 2 applications. All hoods, housings and seals used with these connectors are IP69K rated, meaning the connections are fully protected and resistant to the water jets used to clean equipment. Meanwhile, their large nooks and surfaces have been designed in accordance with European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group (EHEDG) guidance, in order to allow cleaning and disinfecting agents to flow unhindered.

Additionally, Han® F+B connectors are Ecolab-approved for their resistance to highly aggressive cleaning agents, and are fully compliant with FDA 21 guidance thanks to their polypropylene housings. With their smooth finish, impurities and bacteria are prevented from accumulating, ensuring the very highest standards of safety and hygiene can be met.

However, these attributes are far from the only selling points of Han® F+B, a range that offers all of the same simplicity, versatility and reliability for which the Han® range has become known. The connectors can function in a wide temperature range, from -40°C to +125°C, and have been designed to provide easy use in various production environments.

For example, users will not need to open any cable glands on the control cabinet when decoupling field devices, avoiding the need for complicated reconfiguring of fixed wiring and speeding up maintenance processes. Special fluting in the housing walls also ensures they are easy to grip, even in damp or humid conditions, to make them easy to plug and unplug.

As such, Han® F+B connectors are a perfect solution for users looking to minimise downtime in order to embrace flexible schedules and smaller batch productions. Because their housings can be used with hybrid contact inserts, they are also versatile enough to accommodate all types of industrial transmission, including data, signal and power, for a truly future-proof solution.

Han® 1A

HARTING Han® 1A Connectors

Another of the newest additions to the venerable Han® connector range is the Han® 1A, a compact new component developed in response to an increasing trend towards miniaturisation in industrial engineering applications.

With smaller interfaces becoming the norm for robotics and engineering equipment, the Han® 1A’s miniature design is perfectly suited to these needs, requiring up to 30% less space than the established Han® 3A, while providing users with all the benefits of a modern network.

Constructed from lightweight yet durable polyamide plastic, Han® 1A can transmit a maximum of 16 amps and 400 volts, while up to 12 D-Sub contacts can be constructed for signal interfaces. This demonstrates that the smaller size of the new connector does not come at the expense of its functionality or performance.

Indeed, versatility and flexibility are among the Han® 1A’s defining characteristics. By using a modular system of inserts, it is able to integrate contacts for the delivery of data, signals and power, despite an economical design based on just a few components, which greatly simplifies material supply.

For example, modules for Cat. 5 or Cat. 6A are available for data transmission, while a shielded variant can be employed in areas that are particularly susceptible to interference. Additionally, only two components are required to quickly assemble an IP20 solution, while additional housing elements or single wire seals can be used to enhance ingress protection to IP65, suitable for outdoor use.

No matter what configuration you require, Han® 1A’s ‘click and mate’ component design allows the connector to be assembled in seconds without using any specialist tools. Rapid onsite installations are made possible using screw contacts, as well as the pre-assembly of separate units with crimp contacts, and accessories such as fasteners for wall mounting and colour coding clips are also available.

Because of this versatility, Han® 1A is suitable for use for a number of mechanical engineering applications, including connecting tools and smaller machine modules used in heating and cooling units, fans, control terminals, lighting systems, drives and vibration conveyors. Thanks to its EN 45545-2 compliance for fire protection, Han® 1A is also ideal for various railway vehicle applications, including on door systems and ramps, door openers, push buttons, lighting systems and screens.

Han-Eco® B

HARTING Han-Eco® B Connectors

Han-Eco® B is another new product range from HARTING that has been developed to address growing demands for more compact, lightweight connector solutions that are easier to install, helping to prevent unnecessary downtime and inefficiencies.

This new series of hoods and housings in the Han-Eco® portfolio is available in a range of designs and configurations, including bulkhead, surface mount and cable-to-cable, with sizes from 6B to 24B. As with the other products in the Han-Eco® range, they are manufactured using high-performance, glass fibre-reinforced polyamide plastic, making them substantially lighter than traditional metal connectors - by switching from metal to Han-Eco® B, you can achieve weight savings of up to 50% per connector.

The lightweight build does not come at the expense of robustness and performance, as Han-Eco® B products are fully compliant with IEC 61948 and EN 45545-2 standards, offering IP66 protection that makes them suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, and fire resistance according to UL94 V0.

What’s more, Han-Eco® B supports modular inserts, meaning data, signal and power options can all be combined into one standard-sized industrial connector housing for additional space savings. The Eco B range is also fully compatible and intermateable with standard metal Han® B housings, meaning they can be incorporated easily into your existing system design.

However, it is the ease of use that really helps set these new products apart. Han-Eco® B products offer the ability to rear-mount inserts, allowing you to snap pre-assembled inserts into the housing from the rear, rather than installing cables through the bulkhead before assembling the contact inserts. This provides substantial time savings during the installation of control panels, while also giving you the flexibility to separately pre-assemble the switch cabinet units and cable harnesses.

As a result of all these benefits, the Han-Eco® B product series is quickly becoming a popular choice for a number of sectors, including production and manufacturing, machine building and railway transportation.
